Ashton VSG

The Ashton VSG is a powerful cigar with a rich and intoxicating flavor. It is blended exclusively for Ashton by Carlos Fuente Jr. using 4 to 5 year old aged Dominican tobacco. The wrapper leaf is taken from the higher primings and matures slowly by sunlight filtered through the region's natural cloud covering. We tasted the Corona Gorda vitola for this review.

Pre-Smoke

A very attractive cigar, especially with that luscious dark brown, oily wrapper.   The wrapper is smooth and well constructed with a well formed cap. Slightly spongy to the touch and the aroma is earthy with some pepper.

Burn

The cigar’s burn was almost always even, the ash was light gray colored, and kind of flaky.

Flavor

Upon lighting, the cigar gives off a very fragrant thick smoke that makes your mouth water.  Initial flavors are earthy with some dark chocolate and spices. Very elegant and complex spices weave in an out of the cigar offering tastes of cinnamon, cloves, and cedar.

As the cigar progresses, the body becomes more leathery, but hints of vanilla and spices continue to come through. There is some dryness in the finish, and the tickle of black pepper in the back of the throat. A very elegant and rewarding experience.

Suggested Single Malt Pairings

Balvenie 21 Year Old Portwood

An intoxicating matchup full of depth and complexity. The honey and cream flavors of the Balvenie complement the earthiness of the VSG and the spices match up to further enhance the pairing.

An excellent alternative is the Glenfiddich 21 Year Old Caribbean Rum Finish

Sweet dates, creme brulee, coffee and spices perfectly match the VSG and add a tropical spin on this combination.

Suggested Chocolate Pairings

Chuao - Gran Cacao and Wild Truffle

The creamy bittersweet ganache of the Gran Cacao and the 73% cacao provide a rich counterpart that does not compete with the spices in the Balvenie and the VSG.

The slightly sweeter Wild Truffle is amazing with the VSG and Glenfiddich 21 year old in both taste and texture.
