Tyrconnell 10 Year Old Madeira Cask

Kilbeggan, Ireland

Tyrconnell is distilled by Cooley,  one of the few remaining independent distilleries in Ireland.  This highly rated Irish whiskey has matured 10 years in American Oak , then was finished in Madeira casks for a nice element of dryness to an otherwise sweet and fruity spirit. 

Color:  Apricot.

Nose:  Honey, strawberries, ginger and wood.

Body:  Very light body.

Palate:  Tropical fruits and candied ginger with caramel at first taste.  Madeira somewhat evident in the middle.  Faint chocolate note then mellows out to more fruits and spice.

Finish:  Short finish.

ABV:  40%

Awards:  Best Irish Whiskey of the Year in Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2008.

Chuao - Wild Truffle

We opted to stay away from the fruity bon bons for this pairing as the combination was much too cloying.  Wild Truffle presents the simple goodness of a silky rich chocolate confection to pair with this delightful dram.

A beautiful medium smoke with rich flavors of roasted coffee, earthy cocoa, honey and nuts providing an earthiness that offsets the fruit of this whiskey, pulling some of the Madeira flavors forward.  Sweet nut and honey flavors of this cigar complement but never overpower this youthful spirit.  Think of fruit covered in dark chocolate and you will understand this match.
