An extremely well constructed medium to full bodied cigar, Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur is a superb example of Honduran craftsmanship. Lighter in color than a Cuban cigar as a result of its fine Connecticut Shade wrapper, this cedar-aged cigar is made with a rich Honduran blend that is very much in the Cuban tradition.
Pre-Smoke The HDM is wrapped in an elegant light brown Connecticut shade wrapper. It has a nice oily sheen and the wrapper contrasts beautifully with the darker tobaccos at the foot. Also, well constructed like most HDM's, you will find a solid stick with an excellent draw.
Burn
Showing off its good bones, this cigar burns perfectly, leaves a white, tight ash and puts out a thick, creamy smoke.
The Flavor While most maduros have heavy, dark flavors, this is like coffee with cream - literally. Flavors are coffee, caramel and chocolate, but with a lighter side . Spice fades in and out, throughout the smoke.
That's it pretty much - the draw remained excellent throughout, the cigar burned evenly, and the flavors were pretty consistent. Now that may sound boring, but it is anything but. This is not a roller coaster ride, but a relaxing drive on a country road with the top down. Just great!
