In celebration of his 50th birthday, Rocky Patel released the aptly named Fifty. According to his website, Rocky worked for over four years perfecting the blend of this cigar, which features aged tobaccos and an Ecuadorian wrapper hand selected from the unique 7th priming of the tobacco plant. The cigars also utilize two distinct binders and a secret blend of Nicaraguan fillers.
Released in three vitolas, Robusto, Toro and Torpedo, the Fifty is a box pressed beauty. The dark Ecuadorian wrapper is smooth and oily with little veining. The stick is well constructed, firm throughout and is triple capped. The double band contrasts nicely with the cigar, and the orange color scheme is striking.
The wrapper scent is sweet and the pre-light draw was smooth and free. A light cocoa flavor is apparent on the cold draw.
The Fifty lights easily and burns very evenly with a fine burn line. The smoke output is fantastic, and the smoke is thick and creamy. There were no burn problems on the samples we tested. The dark gray ash mirrors the shape of the cigar and is firm.
Take your time and enjoy this cigar, the complexity and flavor transitions make it worthwhile. The Fifty begins with dark espresso, earthy chocolate and a pepperiness that is more chili peppers and curry than it is black or white pepper.
As the pepper mellows out mid-cigar, several other flavors appear. Notes of cedar, oak and nuts flavor the still creamy smooth smoke through the middle third.
The Fifty is a cigar you won't want to put down. Near the end the spice and chocolate notes combine with a citrus flavor (think chocolate-oranges). As the cigar winds down, the finish seems to lengthen producing a lot of spice - almost minty. The cigar was never harsh and the smoke was always cool. Puffing too fast would produce a lot of spice on the finish, but slowing down allowed the other flavors to emerge.
Since the Fifty is a limited edition, you might want to at least try one before they are gone. If you can afford a box - it is worth it. Look to see this cigar on many Top 10 lists, it certainly is on ours.
Other sizes available are the Robusto 5-1/2 x 50, and the Torpedo 6-1/8 x 52.
