Multnomah Whiskey Library - Portland, Oregon

wlb1It's a Bar, It's a Club...No - It's a drink filled Library.

On a recent trip, I was able to check off a top entry on my personal "Scotch Bar Thrill List" with a visit to the Multnomah Whiskey Library.  A bit hard to find, there is only a small, unpretentious sign to mark the doorway on SW Alder in downtown Portland, Oregon. But walk the long dark hallway and ascend a flight of stairs to enter a whiskey world that is unparalleled in selection, decor and service.  Think soaring ceilings, brick walls, old wood, aged leather and a jaw dropping display:  Twelve foot tall, lighted shelves filled with 1,500 prized and rare spirits.  Truly a paradise for those with a reverence for the craft, this ginormous collection is displayed alphabetically within region for scotch, bourbon, rye, rum and other globally distilled liquors.  This heavenly assemblage is currently curarted by local Portland whiskey enthusiast/consultant Stuart Ramsay.

Portland's year old "den of many whiskies" feels posh and exclusive.  Though spacious, it seats only 65 people.  This gives each patron a somewhat private corner in which to enjoy the experience.  Upon entry, you are handed a literal BOOK of current offerings that reads like Murray's bible without the commentary.  The single malt section alone covers over 500 drams and has one of the most extensive selections from Closed Distilleries and Global Malt whiskies that I have seen in any bar in the U.S..  So come prepared to open your wallet if you want to taste something most unique and special.  While not limited to the high end, the harder to find drams will average any where from $30 to $80 for the pleasure of a taste.

wlb2aService is most gracious and unhurried with each bottle wheeled to your table so that you may study the label.  Multnomah's servers, easily a third of my age, are impressively knowledgeable about their whiskies and not at all hesitant to make a great recommendation with some input as to your likes and dislikes.  It was way too easy to settle in and let the fine scotch, ambience and hospitality settle over me.

While many online reviewers call this spot pretentious and complain about the long wait (no reservations), I'm personally thankful to have found an establishment that indulges the true whiskey enthusiast with rare spirits and a beautiful setting in which to savor each treasured drop.
